3 Days in Prague

nomads plant-based slow travel non-luxe

We visited Prague in December 2024 for ~2-3 days during a quick week long trip visiting Prague, Vienna, and Budapest.

We are Ella & Ryan, digital nomads, exploring the world mindfully. Between getting married, becoming nomads, and starting our own businesses, we’re sharing everything we learn along the way.

Architecture

Prague's unique and vibrant architecture appears unmatched across other European cities we've visited.

Local beer

The quality (and volume) of Czech beer was great! Flights (of beer) were affordable, plentiful, and flavourful.

Food & desserts

The food in Prague was insanely good. Between so many vegan options and Trdelník (chimney cakes), we were well set.

What we did in Prague

Aside from eating and drinking, our primary reason for visiting Prague was to experience the renowned Christmas Markets. Relative to other cities we visited after Prague, we found the markets here to be a little more authentic and less commercialized. However, the Christmas Market novelty may have worn off throughout our trip.

🎄 Christmas Markets: The main markets we visited were Old Town Square (the biggest one), Wenceslas Square, and Republic Square. Each had their own unique but were all quite busy, understandably. We recommend doing the majority of your Christmas Market touring during the day as the Markets become incredibly busy in the late evening when the lights are all about to turn on.

🏰 We walked to Prague Castle in the late afternoon on our 2nd day and saw the views of Prague central at night (albeit in the dark). We did get there just as the Market was closing so make sure you take closing times into consideration!

🍻 And full transparency, every other free moment not spent in a market or gazing at a castle, was spent in a brewery, bar, cafe, or restaurant.

What we ate in Prague.

Prague blew us away when it came to both quantity and quality of vegan options.

3️⃣ On our final morning we had the Mushroom creamy fregola (sans goat cheese) at Pauseteria Café Restaurant Garden.

Honestly, we can't emphasize enough how much Prague surprised us with its vegan food. Most places had options that were locally relevant and affordable.

🌱 Střecha: We had one of our best vegan meals on the first night when we visited Střecha close by our Airbnb. Not only did they serve authentic Eastern European and Czech food vegan-ized, they also had a unique social impact proposition that made us genuinely proud to be dining there. We had the schnitzel, potato salad, and no-ribs 💯

🌱 Share Sweet: The following morning we walked to Share Sweet & Espresso Bar and had a delicious full vegan breakfast (share breakfast for 2)

🌱 Pauseteria: On our final morning we had the Mushroom creamy fregola (sans goat cheese) at Pauseteria Café Restaurant Garden.

Where we stayed in Prague.

We found a great little Airbnb within the central area of Prague. Popular Christmas markets were within a 10 minute walk and we had plenty of restaurants, bars, and convenience stores within a couple minutes of us.

2 nights cost CAD $430 which we found to be quite a deal compared to other Airbnb's in the area. The size was perfect, the room was clean and modern, and the wifi worked perfectly.

Travelling to and from Prague.

Arriving in Prague:

🛫 Since we were in the UK already (housesitting in Haywards Heath), we flew from Gatwick Airport on easyJet for CAD $270/each (not bad for a Friday afternoon flight).

🚘 We then took a 1-hour Uber to our Airbnb.

Departing from Prague:

🚊 Since we were heading to Vienna, we hopped on a later afternoon train. It was supposed to be a 4-hour train ride but due to some delays it ended up being 8 hours. We spent CAD $62/each on first class tickets. These tickets were approximately $10 more than economy seats and definitely saved us during the 8 hour delay. Check out RegioJet for your train rides in and out of the Czech Republic.
