3 Days in Vienna

nomads plant-based slow travel non-luxe

We visited Vienna in December 2024 for ~2-3 days during a quick week-long trip visiting Prague, Vienna, and Budapest.

We are Ella & Ryan, digital nomads, exploring the world mindfully. Between getting married, becoming nomads, and starting our own businesses, we’re sharing everything we learn along the way.

What we did in Vienna

Similar to Prague, outside of eating (and perhaps a little less drinking), our initial reason for visiting Vienna was to experience the Christmas Markets. Relative to Prague, Vienna's Christmas Market did not blow us away and definitely seemed a bit more pretentious.

Whether this was genuinely warranted or because the novelty of the busy Markets was quickly wearing thin, we're not sure.

We had some beautiful weather in Vienna to explore various points of interest including City Hall, the Opera District, Burggarten Park, and St. Stephen's Cathedral.

What we ate in Vienna.

We're struggling to write this section as we found Vienna's vegan options to be quite limited and underwhelming. Perhaps we somehow completely missed the recommended spots, but we struggled quite a bit to find a memorable plant-based meal here.

Where we stayed in Vienna.

We found a well located rental (Booking.com) literally ontop of the train station in Vienna. Since we were coming into Vienna on the train and leaving on it, we thought it was a great fit!

The underground subway ran below the central train station making it easy to get into central Vienna.

3 nights cost us CAD $430 which we found to be quite a deal compared to other accommodation options throughout Vienna. We didn't hear the train once, the room was clean, comfortable, and perfect for what we needed.

The Wi-Fi was great for the two of us working remotely during the morning before going out to explore in the second half of the day.

Travelling to and from Vienna.

Arriving in Vienna:

🚊Since we were arriving from Prague, we arrived by train. It was supposed to be a 4-hour train ride but due to some delays it ended up being 8 hours. We spent CAD $62/each on first class tickets. These tickets were approximately $10 more than economy seats and definitely saved us during the 8 hour delay. Check out RegioJet for your train rides in and out of the Czech Republic.

Our rental apartment was literally on top of the train station so no commute was needed!

Departing from Vienna:

🚊 We were heading to Budapest and caught a train with ÖBB. Our train ride was a quick 2 hours and cost us approximately €27/each.
